PRODUCT INFORMATION

Rainbow hematite specimen from Graves Mountain, Georgia, measuring approximately 1.25 inches long and just under 1 inch wide. Graves Mountain rainbow hematite is one of the most visually striking domestic mineral specimens available, and for good reason. Thin iridescent oxide layers over the hematite surface produce a continuous spectrum of color as the viewing angle changes. Blue, green, purple, gold, and red are all visible in the same piece depending on how you hold it. The color is not a coating or treatment. It is a natural optical phenomenon caused by light interfering with the thin oxide film on the hematite surface, the same physics as an oil film on water.

Graves Mountain in Lincoln County, Georgia is the only location in the world known to produce rainbow hematite of this quality. Specimens from this locality are sought by collectors internationally.

Genuine mineral specimen from Graves Mountain, Georgia.
