Warm burnt orange-red carnelian with a Roman soldier carved in high relief cameo style — the soldier faces left in profile, helmet clearly defined, with armor or draped garment visible at the shoulder. The carving sits against a smooth polished background that shows off the natural color graduation in the stone, ranging from lighter orange at the edges to a deeper red-brown at the center.
Carnelian has been the preferred material for cameo and intaglio carving since antiquity. The Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians all used it for signet rings and portrait carvings, and a Roman soldier subject on carnelian is about as traditional as this art form gets. The translucency of the stone means light passes through it differently at different depths of the carving, giving the portrait a dimensional quality that opaque materials cannot replicate.
