Twenty-one carats of hand-carved hematite with a Roman soldier rendered in precise intaglio relief. The subject is carved into the polished black surface of the stone rather than raised above it, creating a portrait that sits deep in the material and catches light dramatically at different angles.

The carving detail is exceptional — the soldier's helmet, facial profile, and surrounding framing elements are all clearly defined. Hematite is a dense, heavy iron oxide mineral that takes a mirror polish and holds fine carved detail exceptionally well, which is why it was the preferred material for intaglio work in European jewelry from the 18th through the 20th century. This piece dates to 1974 at the latest, from the retired jeweler's personal collection.

At 20x15mm this is a substantial stone. Loose and unmounted, ready to be set in a pendant, ring, or brooch. One stone only.
